Direct Recording:
- Active pickups: If your bass has active pickups, you can plug directly into the input of your sound card/interface.
- Passive pickups: For basses with passive pickups (the most common type), you’ll need a DI box or an external amp simulator like a bass pod. These DI boxes boost the low-level signal of the bass to a line level. If your sound card/interface has mic preamps, you can use them as your DI box.
When recording direct, without an external amp simulator, you’ll need to edit the sound using a bass amp simulator, compression, EQ, and perhaps a bass chorus to make it sound warm, full, and alive.
Mic Recording:
- The best results come from close miking a bass amp cabinet that is slightly off-center.
- Consider adding a second mic about 4 feet back. Recommended mic options include the AKG 414 and the Sennheiser 421.
