There have been numerous innovative and influential composers throughout the history of piano playing that it is impossible to provide a comprehensive account even in the most extensive encyclopedia entries. However, there are certain names that simply cannot be omitted from any review.

Firstly, Ludwig van Beethoven stands as the most significant figure in the transition from the Classical to the Romantic periods in classical music. His remarkable contributions to the genre are made even more poignant by the fact that he continued to compose and perform despite completely losing his hearing in the 1790s.

Another composer that cannot be overlooked is the 19th-century Hungarian composer and piano virtuoso, Franz Liszt. He was renowned throughout Europe as a pianist with unparalleled technical ability and was even regarded as the greatest pianist of all time. Anticipating inspirations in the 20th century, his music became a precursor to many others’, and he played a crucial role in the development of musical forms such as the symphonic poem and thematic transformation.

Sergei Rachmaninoff, born in Russia in 1873, was both a composer and a pianist. Although his early compositions were not well-received, his talent was widely acknowledged. After a period of hiatus prompted by critics, he returned with a more developed style and gained significant popularity. Rachmaninoff was famously known for his unusually large hands, which allowed him to create distinctive bell-like sounds by playing widely spaced chords.

Frederic Chopin, a renowned Polish pianist and composer, composed works that were notoriously demanding in terms of technique. Displaying exceptional talent from a young age, he was considered a child prodigy. He supported himself through composition and teaching, and while he performed publicly on various occasions, he achieved global recognition for his music.

It’s worth noting that the greatest pianists in history are not limited to the 18th and 19th centuries, nor is the domain of their excellence restricted to classical music alone. There have been several contemporary innovators deserving of mention, such as Ray Charles, a pioneer in soul, rhythm and blues The Annals Of Blues Guitar - The blues guitar is a genre of music that can be vocal, instrumental or both. It primarily uses the 'blue' notes, which are based on a 'minor pentatonic' scale, also known as the blues scale. Blues music originated in African-American communities in the U.S., drawing from work songs, spirituals, field hollers, chants, shouts, and simple… , and gospel music. His musical and social influence is renowned worldwide.
