If you’ve invested a substantial amount of money in high-quality speakers, you’ll want to ensure that you pair them with an audio amplifier capable of delivering excellent sound quality while fitting within your budget. I’ll offer some tips on audio amplifier technologies to help you make the right purchase decision.

Audio amplifiers come in various shapes and sizes, employing different technologies and featuring diverse specifications. This can make it challenging to decide which model to select. You don’t have to be an expert—simply follow some basic guidelines, and you should be satisfied with your amplifier.

One crucial factor is the amplifier’s size. Some models can occupy half a room, while the latest miniature amplifiers are no larger than a deck of cards. Many units are the size of a standard audio rack, allowing you to easily stack them with your other audio equipment.

The majority of today’s audio amplifiers are solid-state amplifiers rather than traditional tube amplifiers. Tube amps can exhibit audio distortion of up to 10%. Solid-state amplifiers, depending on the technology used, can have lower audio distortion. The most common amplifiers employ “Class-A” and “Class-AB” technologies, also known as “analog amplifiers.” These technologies offer low audio distortion, but their power efficiency is only 10 to 30%. This means that most of the power supplied to the amplifier is wasted as heat, with only a small fraction being used to amplify the audio signal.

In contrast, “Class-D” amplifiers, also called “digital amplifiers,” typically provide power efficiency of 80 to 90%. This allows the amplifier and power supply to be much smaller than analog amplifiers. The trade-off is that digital amplifiers often have higher audio distortion than analog amplifiers. This is primarily due to the switching distortion in the output power stage. However, most modern digital audio amplifiers use a feedback mechanism and can reduce audio distortion to below 0.05%.

When choosing an amplifier, ensure that its output power is sufficient to drive your speakers. The required power is determined by your speakers’ power-handling capacity and the size and layout of your listening space. Speaker power-handling capacity is given as peak power and average power. The peak power value indicates the maximum power the speaker can handle for a brief period, while the average power-handling value indicates the maximum continuous power the speaker can handle without damage.

If your listening environment is small, you may not need to drive your speakers to their rated power-handling capacity. An amplifier capable of delivering 20 to 50 watts may suffice, even if your speakers can handle 100 watts of power. Keep in mind, though, that speakers differ in their sensitivity. Generally, low-impedance speakers are easier to drive to high volumes than high-impedance speakers. Ensure that your amplifier can handle your speakers’ impedance. Lastly, verify that your amplifier produces minimal noise and has a broad enough frequency response. High-quality amplifiers should have a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 100 dB and a frequency response of at least 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
