Despite some early forecasts in 2010 that ebook readers might become obsolete, it appears that they will continue to be popular devices for a while longer. In particular, the comparison between ebook readers and the Apple iPad has been ongoing.

This Kindle DX vs. iPad review compares the two leading ebook readers with large displays. Although the iPad is primarily a tablet, it has often been compared to other ebook readers, so it’s only fair to match it up against the Kindle DX, which is on a similar level, at least in terms of size.

Size

The two devices are relatively similar in size. While there are a few differences—the Kindle is slightly longer, and the iPad is a bit wider, taller, and heavier—you won’t notice much of a difference when carrying either device.

Display

Both devices have the same screen size, a 9.7-inch diagonal, but the technologies used are like night and day. The iPad’s LED-backlit full-color IPS display may outshine the Kindle’s e-ink screen, which only displays 16 shades of gray and can appear somewhat dull. However, the Kindle’s e-ink screen is excellent for glare-free reading and reduces eye strain. For many people, this is the ideal ebook reading experience.

User Interface

The iPad’s touchscreen interface offers a unique experience, allowing users to browse through picture galleries, webpages, and play interactive games with simple finger gestures. On the other hand, the Kindle relies on physical buttons, a 5-way controller, and a physical keyboard for navigation. It may not be the fastest or most modern method, but it works well with the Kindle’s simple and straightforward design.

Battery Life

Despite its colorful display, the iPad’s LCD screen can’t match the battery performance of e-ink technology. The Kindle DX can last 2 to 3 weeks on a single charge, while the iPad typically lasts around 10 hours before needing to be recharged.

Price

The iPad models with 16GB of memory are priced at $499 and $629 for Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi plus 3G, respectively. In comparison, the Kindle DX is priced at a lower $379. The DX lacks Wi-Fi connectivity, but it compensates with free 3G. However, it’s important to note that if you opt for an iPad with 3G, you will also need to allocate an additional $15 to $20 per month for a data plan.

iPad vs. Kindle DX: Which Comes Out on Top?

The answer depends on the specific list you’re referring to. If you’re talking about tablet PCs, then the iPad takes the top spot. However, when it comes to dedicated ebook readers, the Kindle DX is highly regarded. While the iPad offers a great reading experience for browsing color and image-filled content like magazines, children’s books, and cookbooks, it still lacks the e-ink technology that provides the reading experience the Kindle DX offers.
