Movie Posters: The Original Trailers
Where would films be without movie posters? These fantastic marketing tools contribute significantly to box office sales. As large, graphic formats, movie posters have served as the earliest form of teasers and trailers. Over the years, the artistic designs and styles of film posters have evolved to meet the changing preferences of artists, directors, and moviegoers. This journey of creative transformation has given rise to some of the most iconic and unforgettable posters of all time.
Bringing Movies to Life through Posters
It is challenging to compile a definitive list of the best movie posters of all time, as opinions on this subject can vary greatly. What makes a great film poster depends on various factors. However, some have made it to the “best” list due to their pure artistry, iconic imagery, and graphic design. Below are two of my all-time favorite poster prints, worthy of collecting and displaying on my wall.
• Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds – This poster features a striking red background with a white feather running the entire length of the poster at the center. The feather is not depicted as wispy and delicate, yet it does not convey an overtly frightening image either. The film’s title is printed horizontally at the bottom, with the text intersecting the frayed edge of the feather. For me, this poster embodies pure Hitchcock. It subtly alludes to the suspense, allowing the viewer’s imagination to fill in the horror.
• James Mangold’s Walk the Line – A film that chronicles the life of 1940s American music American Music and Vintage Guitars - Mark Weakley is an impressive artist; sculptor, painter, musician. He plays guitar, banjo and harmonica, and has recently recorded a CD of his original compositions. In this exclusive article he talks about himself, about his passions, about his father, about traditional american music, about vintage guitars and banjoes, and much more. American Music and Vintage… legend Johnny Cash. The movie poster is simple yet captivating and engaging. Rendered in the visual style of the 1940s and 1950s, the poster features a rear view and profile of Joaquin Phoenix, who portrays Johnny Cash, holding his flaming red guitar against a backdrop of stylized golden flames framed in red and black. The actor’s profile is characteristically alluring, and Phoenix is perfectly suited to embody the character’s brooding, cool, rock star persona. For me, this is an example of how exceptional visual design can set the tone and artistry of a film through poster printing.
