Recording Via Time

My Stash

These days, listening to music on compact discs and audio tapes is no longer a novelty. But have we ever stopped to wonder how the sound gets there? Recording music involves capturing performances for later playback. This is what musical bands and popular singers do. Then, record labels like Virgin Records and Sony transform them into high-quality tapes or CDs for our enjoyment in cars or wherever we go.

The concept of recording music first emerged when a Swiss watchmaker introduced the first musical box in 1796. It was followed by the phonograph invented by Edison in 1877. Edison created a cylinder with soft materials like lead or tinfoil. A stylus would create grooves on these materials, and the recording was established based on the depth of the grooves and the measured air pressure.

In 1896, Valdemar Poulsen demonstrated magnetic recording. In this method, a tape is continuously moved under a recording head. The head transfers digital data corresponding to the sound onto the tape. The playback head then reads these tapes and decodes the data to play them back.

Initially, magnetic recordings were not popular and were inefficient. People preferred phonographs over magnetic records. For example, …

The Best Piano Players Ever

When it comes to piano greats, there are too many to choose from. Today, numerous talented artists continue the proud tradition of fantastic piano work. However, who are some of the individuals that revolutionized piano music for the better? This list is by no means exhaustive, but here are a few musicians who made their mark in the medium.

Jazz has had a profound influence on the sounds we hear today. From jazz emerged rock, soul, and the overall attitude towards music that characterizes our main music genres. One of the pioneers of piano jazz was Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines. His work paved the way for experimentation in piano jazz, making him the rightful inspiration for many contemporary pianists alive today. He led a colorful life, including close associations with Capone’s mafia and a career that spanned brothels and speakeasies, but his impact is immeasurable.

Another star of piano music was the genius Art Tatum. “Genius” is an overused term these days, so one might be forgiven for thinking it could be an exaggeration, but Tatum truly was a genius. He possessed a photographic memory that he primarily used for music and baseball facts. Moreover, he had natural perfect pitch and …

Are Hymns Special?

What makes hymns so special? Why do they make a difference? I believe hymns matter for several reasons. Hymns are meaningful, poignant, relevant, beautiful, and even reverent. Many forms of Christian music fall into this category as well. In this article, I would like to explore each of these aspects in detail.

One thing that many people have in common is the desire to find meaning. Meaning is sought after when we yearn for something deeper. Most of us share the quest to find meaning in almost everything. The fundamental question that most individuals ask when something unfortunate happens in their lives is often “Why?” By seeking meaning and discovering it, we gain insight into inspirations and concepts that were previously inaccessible to us. This enables us to achieve a variety of things.

Firstly, it allows us to connect with our fellow human beings in a profound way. We can share our knowledge, expertise, and communicate what is important and meaningful to us, thereby imparting meaning to those around us. Finding meaning also helps us discover new aspects of ourselves. We learn what we are capable of and are able to challenge ourselves to achieve goals that we once thought …

How Are Hymns Different Than Other Songs?

Hymns are essentially “Songs of Praise.” But what does this mean? Are hymns different from other types of praise songs? Did hymns always sound the way they do today? These are excellent questions.

Typically, when someone mentions singing a song of praise, a specific image comes to mind. For me, it’s a congregation of people in a large place of worship, eyes closed, singing melodies together in unison.

However, when someone asks me to sing a hymn, a completely different imagery emerges. Why is this?

Hymns. They are something sacred. Something profoundly and inherently significant. Hymns seem to be crafted from extraordinary and undeniable substance. The language used may be unfamiliar to many, but it carries a sense of something ancient, deep, and profoundly meaningful. Hymns can be simple yet evoke vivid imagery, emotion, and reflection.

The fundamental purpose of a hymn is to convey God’s attributes and His relationship with humanity. Hymns are often sung directly to God or to Jesus. They offer praise and exaltation to Him.

Hymns were not always accompanied by music. In fact, until relatively recently, hymn verses were separated from the melody, and the music was indicated with a side note.

Over time, hymns …

What is Anglo-Welsh Literature and why Should Anyone Care?

As a Welsh ex-pat currently residing in the USA I have noticed a profound disparity between the notion of Wales that many Americans of Welsh descent entertain and the reality that I left behind five years ago. Nowhere is this more evident than in the literary field. The triumphs of yesteryear are rightly held in high regard but modern literary trends and authors are …
