Guitar Scales – Getting good from Scales

Most guitarists learn the minor pentatonic scale as their first scale. It’s simple and versatile. However, there are numerous ways to use that trusty pentatonic box scale that go far beyond the basics. Let’s take a look!

The most obvious use of the pentatonic minor scale is to play it over a minor chord on the guitar. This works well and is quite effective.

The next step is to use the same minor pentatonic scale over a major or dominant 7th chord. This may seem against the rules, but it has become an accepted sound in blues and music styles related to it. You can also modify the same box pattern to create a major pentatonic scale.

If you want to learn how to play scales, it’s important to start by understanding how the major scale works before moving on to more complex ones. This means that different musical scales work for different genres of music. For example, the blues scale follows a different pattern than the diatonic or pentatonic scale. While it’s important to read about scales as a beginner, it’s beneficial to study chords first before fully grasping the significance of guitar scales.

Spelling out the notes as you play them will help you remember your chords and scale progressions. Additionally, when you’re just learning a scale, take the patterned progressions as slow as possible and gradually increase your speed as you become more comfortable. Keep in mind that once you’ve mastered the pattern, challenge yourself by pushing your limits. This not only improves the flexibility of your fingers but also trains your mind to adapt to the speed of your hands.

If you’re a beginner with limited knowledge of scales, it may be time to invest in learning at least the major scale to become more versatile in playing the guitar Strumming Practicing The Guitar - Practicing the guitar takes time

Solos in music can be pre-rehearsed performances of memorized notes or they can be improvised. In genres like rock and jazz, which heavily feature the guitar, solos are often improvised. To deliver a great solo, it is important to have a solid understanding of guitar scales.

Fortunately, the guitar is a relatively simple instrument for playing scales. This is partly because transposing to different keys is as easy as playing the same finger pattern in different positions on the fretboard.
