Home sound equipment typically consists of a set of stereo speakers and a subwoofer connected to an amplifier within a home setting. Stereo, or stereophonic sound, refers to the ability to create directional sound from two separate speakers. From stereo, this concept has evolved into multichannel sound.

Multichannel sound, commonly known as surround sound, utilizes around 7 independent sound channels or speakers. It is often referred to as 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 channel sound.

Home stereo systems are connected to create a 5.1 channel surround sound. In a 5.1 setup, there are five satellite speakers along with a single subwoofer. This configuration is an industry standard for TV shows and music, with five channels of audio and a sixth bass speaker or subwoofer channel used for special effects like bass sounds in pop music.

A 6.1 channel sound system adds an additional center speaker placed between the two surround sound speakers behind the listener. This setup provides a more immersive surround sound experience.
