From early cavemen etching drawings on mountains and cave walls, every culture and people have left reminders of their identities and daily lives through the art they created. Some cultures left their marks with pottery, others with intricate sculptures and fountains; regardless of the era or culture, all have influenced contemporary design and craftsmanship. We are an amalgamation of what has come before.
It would be impossible to advance in art without looking back and recognizing where we’ve been. Truly exceptional artists draw inspiration from past masters, including those found in nature.
Art schools begin by studying the greats who have left their footprints for all to admire and examine. Why do we remember the names of Van Gogh, Renoir, Michelangelo, Matisse, Degas, and Cézanne? Because they forever changed the art world. Studying the past to make a mark on the future holds true not only for art but also for other areas of study.
