Original Movie Posters – Linen Backing

Linen Backing is the most widely accepted method for preserving and restoring authentic vintage movie posters and other artworks. Many dealers and major auction houses regularly offer linen-backed posters in their inventories or auctions, and it is not uncommon for collectors to have their entire collections linen-backed.
The process of linen backing involves attaching the poster to Japanese Masa paper using an acid-free paste, and then attaching the Masa paper to acid-free linen/canvas. During this process, the poster is cleaned and deacidified, and any fold lines and imperfections, such as water stains and ink, can be removed by a skilled restorer.
Linen backing is technically reversible, provided the correct paste has been used. It is possible to reback a poster without too many issues, but if the poster is simply demounted, it cannot be returned to its original condition.
Paper loss can be repaired, and art retouched by the best restorers. Some use extensive airbrushing, which may detract from the authentic nature of the poster. Borders can be repaired or altered using airbrushing and other techniques.
