Early history

Generally speaking, the modern concept of the poster emerged in 1870 when color lithography was perfected to a level that enabled mass production of the same image on a large scale. Posters in a more general form have existed in the shape of placards and posted bills for several centuries, advertising Shakespearian plays and providing government declarations to people throughout history.

However, it was the invention of lithography in 1796 that initiated the production of posters and other similar products on a large scale, as opposed to handmade notes that promoted events. By the 1890s, the technique had spread from its origins in Germany to the rest of Europe. Many renowned artists at this time created poster images as art, including Henri de
