The finest reproduction Jacquard wall hanging tapestries originate from France, Belgium, and Italy, while the best handwoven tapestries come from China, where they have been hand-weaving silks and fine carpets for over 800 years. There are five types of tapestries available today, not including original pieces, which are excellent if you can afford them. The highest quality are custom tapestries, followed by handwoven reproduction tapestries. Next are the Jacquard woven wool wall hangings, followed by Jacquard woven cotton wall hanging tapestries. Between them, in terms of quality and value, are serigraphed or silk-screened tapestries. The least expensive and most affordable are digital reproduction tapestries, featuring town, cafe, and country scenes of Europe.
Custom tapestries are unique designs handwoven for special events or situations. Typically woven from 100% New Zealand wool, they are carefully crafted one thread at a time by skilled weavers. Their cost is much lower than that of an authentic vintage wall hanging tapestry, and a significant advantage is their uniqueness and ability to meet specific design requirements.
