African Gospel Music – Identifying the Secular from Gospel
Gospel music is considered one of the primary music genres alongside mainstream secular music. It is primarily composed to express popular themes of entertainment, but African Gospel Music specifically is used to express religious beliefs based on the Christian faith. This form of music provides a powerful alternative to secular music while promoting upright moral values that are often absent in secular genres. The general genres of gospel music and their subgenres can be classified as “Black Gospel” or Urban Contemporary Gospel, gospel blues, progressive southern gospel found in Southern Gospel, bluegrass, and gospel blues.
Most gospel compositions tend to address and present communal values associated with the Christian life by expressing biblically related messages and personal experiences. This is accomplished through the use of various musical styles, all with the primary goal of addressing faith, artistic enjoyment, and ceremonial use.
