Mobility in music production is truly a gift for which we should be grateful. For those of us with long commutes to work every day, it can be a real hassle to have to wait until we return home to create the music that keeps playing in our heads. When netbooks emerged, manufacturers immediately recognized their potential as mini computers. Now, with the introduction of the iPad, how will netbooks be affected? Let’s examine a few ways in which the iPad surpasses the currently available netbooks, as well as some potential challenges and concerns for music producers.

Netbooks typically run on standard operating systems like Windows XP and Vista. Some modified versions may even feature fully functional Mac OS, such as Leopard and Snow Leopard. In contrast, the iPad will have a less versatile operating system, resulting in fewer capabilities overall. However, these limitations are said to encourage developers like Propellerheads to think outside the box and create something more streamlined than their current full-OS offering, Reason 4.0.
