Folk Music Genres – Folk Punk

When people think of folk music, the last thing they typically associate it with is punk. However, surprisingly, there is a genre known as Folk Punk.

In its early days, folk punk was referred to as rogue folk and is a fusion of folk music and punk rock. The Pogues were among the first bands to play this type of music in the early 1980s. They achieved significant commercial success with this genre, producing several top 10 hits. Their biggest hit was “Fairytale of New York.”

The majority of folk punk bands write and perform original music that they create themselves. In the folk genre, this is unusual, as many folk bands rework traditional lyrics and melodies when they perform. However, when folk punk bands do incorporate traditional folk music into their songs, they often draw inspiration from sea shanties and gypsy music.

The Pogues, Billy Bragg, The Levellers, and Oysterband are among the most prominent folk punk bands. The Men They Couldn’t Hang are another popular punk folk band, although they haven’t achieved significant commercial success. They perform an English style of folk punk that many people who don’t typically enjoy folk music or punk rock find appealing.
