Plop Art – The Concept Plop Art is an unfavorable term used to describe Public Art from various genres, such as Abstraction, Modernism, or Contemporary Artworks, predominantly sculptures, placed in front of workplace buildings, business plazas, parks, and other public venues. These Plop Artworks were not widely appreciated by the general public, as they were often perceived as unattractive or unsuitable for their installation locations and surrounding environments.

According to Artnet.com, American artist James Wines (born 1932) coined the term Plop Art in 1969. The term was seen as both progressive and conservative in its relevance. Progressive artists criticized Public Art for its failure to adopt an environmentally-oriented approach to create a relationship between Public Art and Architecture. Conservatives appreciated it because anyone could create anything, even if it was appalling, meaningless, and abstract, without requiring skill or talent. The word “plop” itself carries a negative connotation, meaning a flop or something undesirable. Additionally, the negative parlance of Plop Art was associated with its creation, largely at the public’s expense.
