What distinguishes fantasy books from the typical mass-market literature What is Anglo-Welsh Literature and why Should Anyone Care? - Ceri Shaw is a former college lecturer from Cardiff, South Wales. Currently he attempts to make a living as a Web Designer and as a freelance writer on a range of topics including Literature. He is a regular contributor to Americymru.com. Ceri wrote this article about Anglo-Welsh literature and its exploration of the themes of… that some people might not prefer? No offense intended to anyone who enjoys those books; it’s just that my taste in literature is different.

Primarily, the aspect that sets fantasy books apart and elevates them to another level is the fantastical element. You might be thinking, “What a big surprise.” However, it’s not solely because of the elaborate creatures and magic, though they are indeed remarkable products of imagination. The main appeal lies in the potential inherent in the realm of fantasy.

The potential I am referring to is the ability to do “anything you want.” Characters can vanish, melt, fly, or walk through mountains. This is particularly intriguing to me because, although my imagination strives to be boundless, there are still possibilities and scenarios I have yet to explore. Moreover, the situations themselves can be exciting, engaging, and enlightening.

Some argue that all books are “exercise for the mind,” while others believe that only specific books, such as “Ulysses” and other more unconventional works, serve this purpose. Books that may seem aimless and pointless to younger readers like myself can come across as dull. However, fantasy books, as the name suggests, provide exercise for our imaginations, presenting a challenge that pushes us to greater heights.

Ultimately, you should be able to develop your imagination and creativity through reading quality fantasy books. Some examples that come to mind are The Lord of the Rings and the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. There are countless books that resemble Tolkien’s work, but they never quite reach the same level. That’s why I would recommend reading the original Lord of the Rings.

While the Malazan Book of the Fallen series could be perceived as similar to LOTR, the compelling characters and captivating universe make such comparisons seem insignificant.

In conclusion, if you haven’t yet delved into fantasy and wish to expand your imagination and creativity, explore some fantasy books of your choosing.
