This film revolves around Jenny, a kindergarten teacher, and her boyfriend Steve, who plan a romantic weekend getaway. Steve intends to propose and has discovered a picturesque location—a remote lake surrounded by woods that appears to be deserted. However, their tranquility is shattered when a gang of obnoxious kids descends upon their campsite. Enjoying the thrill of taunting the adults, the gang steals their belongings and vandalizes their car, leaving them stranded. When Steve confronts the kids, a heated argument ensues, culminating in a shocking and violent attack. Fleeing for help, Jenny becomes the target of a brutal and relentless cat-and-mouse game as she desperately tries to escape her young pursuers and find her way out of the woods.
Based on the ratings I read about this film, I had higher expectations than what it actually delivered. The movie starts off slowly to establish the storyline and then gradually picks up momentum.
However, once the kids start chasing Jenny through the woods, it becomes somewhat monotonous. One would expect someone with common sense to use the environment to their advantage and seek revenge, but apparently, that’s not the direction the film takes. I noticed at least three or more instances where the protagonist, particularly the woman, had opportunities to kill or harm one or more of the kids. I suppose the main characters were too naïve to consider creating weapons for self-defense and simply fleeing. That’s the nature of this film, I suppose.
Regarding the story itself, I found it to be quite intriguing. It reflects a scenario that could potentially happen, considering that nowadays kids seem to be out of control and possess more energy than their parents (due to new laws implemented by the government). As for the actors, I believe everyone did a great job in their respective roles. Although there were a few scenes where the main characters didn’t display much emotion, even when injured.
This film leans more towards being a thriller rather than a horror movie. If anyone claims this film was scary, they must have only watched Disney movies their whole life. Overall, it is worth watching, at least once. However, I must admit that I wished the ending had played out differently, with the protagonist exacting revenge by eliminating all the kids.
If you haven’t seen this film and are contemplating whether or not to watch it, I would say it’s worth giving it a try, at least once.
