Joan Baez is not only a musician, but also a political icon. Her music is secondary to her political conscience. Joan Baez utilizes music as a means to communicate and promote significant political values. She can be considered the matriarch of female singer-songwriters, as she was one of the first women whose songs were taken seriously and embraced by her peers.
