Mastering is a process that a track goes through after it has been recorded, which prepares it and transfers it to a storage medium. The resulting copy, known as “The Master,” serves as the source for all other duplicates. During the mastering process, the original sound recording is equalized, compressed, and edited to reduce sound artifacts such as clicks, dropouts, hum, and hiss. The levels or volume may be adjusted, the track can be edited, fade-ins or fade-outs can be added, and other enhancements can be made.
