In its early days, folk punk was referred to as rogue folk and is a fusion of folk music and punk rock. The Pogues were among the first bands to play this type of music in the early 1980s. They achieved significant commercial success with this genre, producing several top 10 hits. Their biggest hit was “Fairytale of New York.”

The Pogues, Billy Bragg, The Levellers, and Oysterband are among the most prominent folk punk bands. The Men They Couldn’t Hang are another popular punk folk band, although they haven’t achieved significant commercial success. They perform an English style of folk punk that many people who don’t typically enjoy folk music or punk rock find appealing.
