Ah, broken chords. The sound they produce, the cascading pattern of chordal notes, is simply gorgeous. There’s something undeniably captivating about it. And the best part is that this technique is one of the easiest to learn. All you need to do is have a chord under your fingers and be able to “break it up.”
So, what do I mean by “break it up”? You’ve probably heard of solid chords. This is when all the tones of the chord are played simultaneously. For example, if I play a C Major triad by pressing down all three keys at once, that’s a solid chord. However, if I play the individual notes of this chord one at a time, I get a broken chord.
Broken chords are frequently used in New Age piano music. There’s something incredibly appealing about playing the notes of a chord in a broken pattern. Perhaps it’s because it gives the piano a fuller sound, or maybe it’s simply because it sounds beautiful.
Now, let’s explore how we can create broken chords.
In the lesson “Reflections in Water,” we encounter four open position chords. These chords are perfect for “breaking up” because they are … ...Read the rest.

The Bible’s King David, who may have been an ancestor of Jesus and is considered the greatest king in ancient history and the first Alpha Male in history, had a challenging and remarkable journey to greatness.
Similar to the biblical king, Michelangelo’s masterpiece, David, also has an intriguing and eventful past.
The Rock That Would Become a King
The large block of marble that would eventually transform into King David was quarried over 40 years before Michelangelo took possession of it. It was originally intended for sculptor Agostino di Duccio, an assistant to Donatello.
Di Duccio did envision a statue of David in the piece, but we cannot know exactly what it would have looked like as he stopped working on it after two years, claiming that the marble was too difficult to sculpt.
Waiting for Greatness
The partially sculpted block of stone remained unused for many years until Antonio Rossellino attempted to work on it in 1474. However, he gave up after only a few months, stating that the marble was too challenging to work with.
Finally, in the year 1501, an unknown 26-year-old assistant sculptor was given the abandoned and damaged piece to practice on. … ...Read the rest.

In the past, writing with pencil and paper was the only available method for composers, and it was considered the norm. However, even in today’s modern technological era, some composers, especially those born before 1940, still prefer and choose to write using this traditional approach, despite the advancements in contemporary technology. Why would someone forego the tools of the 21st century in favor of the rudimentary pencil and paper method?
Often, a piece of music is imagined internally within a composer’s mind. Sitting down at an instrument like a guitar or piano can actually be a distraction from what they are hearing internally. The main advantage of composing with pencil and paper is the ability to focus on the musical vision without being sidetracked. It allows one to remain in a meditative state and concentrate on listening intently, capturing what they hear. Pencil and paper-based composition doesn’t impose any predefined sound suggestions, allowing the composer to create the music as it naturally comes to them, without being influenced by the sound produced by an instrument. Sometimes, playing a melody on a piano or keyboard can divert the composer’s attention, causing them to lose sight of the overall … ...Read the rest.
