When people used to talk about Christian hip-hop artists, it wasn’t always in the most positive light. The genre of hip-hop for spreading the Gospel had its fair share of disappointments as it found its footing. However, today we can witness some of the most impressive musicians in this genre.
Let’s start with one of the most renowned Christian rappers today, Lecrae. As an artist signed to Reach Records, Lecrae has had a remarkable career in this genre. He has released several hit albums and has broken barriers with popular tracks like ‘Jesus Muzik’ and ‘Take Me As I Am’.
There are also artists who have been able to navigate across genre lines and find their place. One such example is Toby Mac, who gained initial recognition and stardom as a frontman in DC Talk. While the structure remains consistent, hip-hop songs typically incorporate more rhymes, often including as many as 32 rhymes in a standard 16-bar verse. Let’s explore the components of a track and how you can utilize them to write a hip-hop song.
Chorus and Verses: Allies or Enemies? Many songwriters prefer to write the chorus first and then the verses, while others do the opposite. When writing a hip-hop song, the key is to establish a strong connection between the two, so that each verse builds upon the theme of the chorus. For example, if your chorus revolves around breakups, you can write three different verses about different aspects of breakups. The first verse could depict a teenage couple experiencing their first love and subsequent breakup (similar to Slick Rick’s “Teenage Love”).
