Archaeology Courses
The study of archaeology began approximately five centuries ago when people discovered the value of excavating ancient marble statues and ornaments created by the ancient Greeks and Romans. These artifacts were sold to wealthy noblemen and were found in Greece, Italy, and the Mediterranean islands, which had been centers of civilization for over two thousand years. Researchers began to examine these artistic relics, realizing that they could learn about the ways of life of people who had lived long ago.
An M.A./M.S. degree in archaeology is sufficient for directing field crews and qualifies individuals for many government positions in the field. It also allows them to work in the private sector, teach at community colleges, and work for certain museums. A minimum requirement for certification by the Society of Professional Archaeologists is an M.A./M.S. degree with a thesis, along with a year of field and laboratory experience.
