What is Audio Compression and Why Should I Care?

Whether you enjoy listening to music or creating and recording it, understanding the concept of “compression” can be beneficial. At the very least, you can impress your friends with your knowledge of this technical aspect of audio. When done correctly, compression can make audio sound louder and punchier without the need to increase the volume. However, it is possible to overdo compression.

So, what is compression? Simply put, it is a process that compacts audio. How does this improve sound quality? For one, it evens out the loudness of a track, balancing the really quiet passages with the unexpectedly loud ones. Have you ever been in a car when a song starts playing at a low volume, prompting you to turn it up, only for your eardrums to be blasted when the loud parts kick in? You may have found yourself adjusting the volume multiple times throughout a song to compensate for the extreme differences in quietness and loudness. In doing so, you were essentially compressing the audio by turning down the loudest parts and turning up the quietest parts.

Wouldn’t it be easier if you could just press a button on your car stereo to automate this …

Book Review – The Camel Club by David Baldacci

I have been an enthusiast of David Baldacci since I read The Winner back in 1997. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style, and I have read all his books to date, eagerly awaiting his new releases. The Camel Club is no exception to the rule, offering another thrilling page-turner.

Cast of Characters:

Members of the Camel Club:

  • Oliver Stone: camps outside the White House to protest the government and lives at a church, where he is known as the lead conspiracy theorist.
  • Caleb Shaw: enjoys dressing in period costumes and works at the Library of Congress in the rare books department.
  • Reuben Rhodes: a former government worker turned loading dock employee and drug burnout.
  • Milton Farb: suffers from OCD, has a perfect memory, is a mathematical prodigy, and owns a website-building company, having made significant money on Jeopardy.

Other Characters:

  • Alex Ford: a secret service agent whose loyalties are a bit unclear and is nearing retirement.

What is Digital Audio and Why Should I Care?

OK, so I hinted earlier that I would explain what digital audio Just how to Set HDMI Audio Correctly - HDMI cables are used to transfer video and audio signals through a single line between HDMI devices, such as a home theater receiver and an HDTV. The cable can deliver 8 separate channels of digital audio for surround sound systems, including signals for the right and left speakers, the center channel, two rear surround speakers,… is in a way that regular people could understand it. Here it is: if the audio is in a computer, it’s digital.

Easy, right? Now, you might wonder what I meant when I said “analog” is the opposite of “digital.” Well, here’s the explanation: if the audio is on a physical medium like tape or a record (those black, round, flat things your parents used to listen to music on), it’s analog.

There are some nitpickers out there who would argue that “some audio outside of a computer can still be digital” and that “just because it’s on tape doesn’t mean the audio is analog.” While the nitpickers aren’t wrong, we can ignore those details for now. Yes, the audio on cell phones, iPods (and …

Even You Can Learn to Sing Confidently

If you’ve ever witnessed someone sing the National Anthem before a ballgame, you can see the impact nerves can have on a person. Even some of the world’s best singers have stumbled on a song we all know, simply because they’re nervous. If you ever plan to sing that important song in front of people, you better learn how to sing confidently first!

Learning to sing may seem like it comes naturally to some people, but it’s often years of practice that transform an untrained voice into something beautiful. Young individuals who sing well do so not just because they were born with the talent, but because they practice all the time. They sing at parties, in their cars, at church, at school, and while walking down the street – seizing every opportunity they get. Each time they sing a note, they’re practicing their instrument. They learn to sing confidently through constant practice.

One of the most common ways to practice singing is by joining a choir. Singing with others eases the pressure of performing solo and allows you to receive ongoing feedback. If you hit a wrong note, everyone will let you know!

Another way to improve …
