Poetry is considered one of the oldest forms of art and expression. It exists in various forms and languages. The earliest form of poetry began as verses, which were used to narrate stories. These stories were more engaging when presented as poems and were appreciated by a wide audience. However, historical poetry styles differ significantly from modern poems. One definition describes poetry as a traditional art form in which human language is used for its aesthetic qualities, in addition to or instead of its notional and semantic content. Modern poetry, however, also includes pictorial representations.

The evolution of poetry styles throughout history is a fascinating subject. It is believed that the oldest forms of poetry were primarily oral. Some of these poems are considered epics due to their extensive content and were later written down. Over time, poetry styles evolved into verses that relied on sound and pattern. These verses were often rhymed and organized into units called feet, which consisted of syllabic sounds with specific lengths and stressed and unstressed syllables. Rhyme was also a crucial element in poetry writing, with various types being employed, such as masculine and feminine rhymes.

Masculine rhymes featured identical stresses and differing consonant sounds, while feminine rhymes consisted of different sounds with stressed syllables followed by unstressed rhyming syllables. These were also known as double rhymes, with examples including arrival, revival, and survival. Triple rhymes, like greenery, machinery, and scenery, were another form used. Additionally, there were imperfect and slant rhymes, such as boot, foot, and shoot.

Later poets Reflections on some well loved Poets - Ziggy Olivier wrote this article. He met Dylan Thomas and spent some of his youth drinking whisky with him. He said me: "Everything you may have read about him was true." Reflections on some well loved Poets Approaching my own demise, I was delighted this Christmas to receive from a teenage granddaughter a gift that… transitioned from metered verses to free verses, which could be either short or long and did not specify the length of a line in a poem. These were primarily written in hypertext. Walt Whitman, the pioneer of free verse, wrote a poem called Leaves of Grass, which explores various emotions people experience in different situations. Today, with the advent of the internet The World-wide-web Niche - The global economy has been severely impacted. Songs in various languages can also be considered poetry. Many songs are rhymed and have metered verses.
