impressionistKnown Art offers reproductions of some of the world’s most exceptional art, with a particularly extensive selection of Impressionist works. Artists such as Van Gogh and Cezanne were pioneers of the movement. To truly understand art, it’s essential to delve into the mind of the artist. The circumstances in which a work of art is created greatly contribute to its interpretation. An individual’s understanding of a particular piece is significantly influenced by their knowledge. Here is a brief overview of some artists featured on this website, as knowing about the artist can inform a buyer’s decision-making process.

Claude Monet, often considered the founder of the Impressionist movement, was the most prolific advocate of the movement’s philosophy of expressing one’s perceptions of nature. He specialized in landscapes and women within these settings. Later in life, he experienced cataracts that affected both his eyes. His impaired vision may have been a blessing in disguise, as he created some of his most famous work during this time. It’s speculated that after his surgery, he was able to perceive certain colors even better than the average person.

Van Gogh was a complex man who suffered from depression and sporadic bouts of mental illness. He produced his best work during the last two years of his life. His emotional struggles significantly influenced his work, as he created some of the most evocative pieces of the 19th and 20th centuries. His use of color and line tell the story of a highly emotional man who may have been overwhelmed by his extraordinary capacity for feeling. He died alone and unknown at the age of thirty-seven from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Paul Cezanne was a French painter who is believed to have established a bridge between Impressionism and Cubism. Pablo Picasso referred to Cezanne as “the father to us all.” Cezanne was a master of composition, color, structure, and tone. He studied his subjects intensely, striving to accurately depict the complexity of human perception.

Like his friend Vincent van Gogh, with whom he painted in France in 1888, Paul Gauguin struggled with depression and even attempted suicide. He traveled to Martinique in search of an idyllic landscape and worked as a laborer on the Panama Canal construction. He was dismissed from his job after just two weeks. Gauguin’s work reflects his thirst for life and unending curiosity. The vibrant colors and fluid motifs of many of his paintings reveal a passionate man who, unlike Van Gogh, continued to live life to the fullest.

Another trailblazer in the Impressionist movement, Pierre-Auguste Renoir left an indelible mark on the art world. A celebrator of beauty and particularly feminine sensuality, he is known for his stunning portraits of women in the mid-1800s. One of his most memorable works is Bather With Blonde Hair, in which he pays tribute to the female form in all its glory, capturing it realistically yet dreamlike.
