Shah Jahan fulfilled his beloved wife’s dream, and the rest is history. The opulence of the Taj Mahal works like magic on those who behold it. It casts a spell, leaving viewers amazed by the magnificent display of mysticism. It boasts being the most enduring symbol of love in the world and the most popular tourist attraction.

Architecture of the Taj Mahal

The construction of the Taj Mahal required extraordinary artistry and skill. The masterpiece was not built overnight. Much effort was put into the design and erection of this grand structure. The current Taj Mahal is the result of the talent, experience, expertise, and diligence of approximately twenty thousand laborers and artisans. The period of its construction is equally fascinating, taking twenty-two years to transform Mumtaz’s dream into an epitome of eternal love. Construction began in 1632 and was completed in 1654.

Not only was the duration of construction lengthy, but the amount of royal treasure invested in its creation was also astonishing. Historians believe that Shah Jahan spent thirty-two million rupees from the royal treasury and consulted numerous experts from the Middle East and Europe. Master craftsmen were imported from Qannauj, Lahore, Multan, Baghdad, Shiraz, and Bukhara to create this magnificent marble structure.

A fleet of one thousand elephants transported construction materials sourced from various parts of India and Central Asia. Twenty-eight different types of rare, precious, and semi-precious stones were used in the inlay work that adorned the Taj.

The architectural complex of the Taj Mahal consists of five main elements:

  1. The darwaza or the main gateway
  2. The Baggecha or the garden
  3. The Masjid or the Mosque
  4. The Naqqar Khana or the Rest House
  5. The Rauza or the Mausoleum
