Many people believe that to paint with watercolors, one must be a skilled painter, but this is not the case. Anyone with a flair for creativity can become a proficient painter.

All you need is paper, watercolors, and your imagination. With a few tips on how to hold a paintbrush, different painting techniques, and how to give shape to your imagination, you can master watercolor painting. Here are some basic tips for painting with watercolors:

1.) One simple approach to watercolor painting is to start by sketching your subject on paper with a pencil. Pencils allow you to draw lightly, making it easy to erase later. Painting is easier when you have a rough sketch on paper because it defines the boundaries for your brush. Clean, well-defined boundaries are crucial for a painting to look its best. Sketching first helps maintain the neatness of your painting, which can be further enhanced by erasing pencil lines once the painting has completely dried.

2.) Another important tip for watercolor painting is to have two separate water bowls: one for lighter shades and cleaning the brush, and another specifically for darker colors like black. Many people struggle with using black alongside lighter shades, as the colors can smudge due to dirty water caused by darker shades. Therefore, it’s best to use two separate bowls of water for painting purposes.

3.) It has also been observed that some people find it challenging to paint trees or other structures that require symmetrical painting. For instance, right-handed individuals may find it easier to paint the right side of tree branches than the left side. In such cases, it’s helpful to turn your page upside down and paint the left branch of the tree comfortably with your right hand.

4.) When painting, remember to keep it simple. For example, if you want to include human figures in your painting, you can paint their outlines and omit facial details and other elements like their feet. Instead, paint the grass and depict their legs standing on the grass. It’s always a good idea to have a towel nearby, as you can mute colors by blotting the paper with a damp towel and keep your hands clean, preventing smudges on your painting.
