Dharamshala is a hill station situated in the upper reaches of the Kangra Valley. Associated with the Tibetan Government in exile, Dharamshala offers refuge to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet.

Surrounded by a dense canopy of coniferous forest consisting of majestic Deodars and fringed by snow-capped mountains on three sides, the fourth side faces the valley. As the center of the Tibetan exile community in India, Dharamshala means ‘spiritual sanctuary’. Following the Tibetan uprising in 1959, Dharamshala became a haven for a large number of Tibetan refugees who followed their leader, the Dalai Lama, here. The town’s popularity as a tourism destination is due to the presence of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community.

Dharamshala is divided into two distinct parts – Lower Dharamshala and Upper Dharamshala. While Lower Dharamshala is a commercial hub with bustling civic life, Upper Dharamshala has a colonial charm with British-themed suburbs of McLeod Ganj and Forsythganj.

Dharamshala offers tourists a variety of tourism options. One of the main attractions is the town of McLeod Ganj, which is famous worldwide for the presence of the Dalai Lama. It is also an educational and religious center for Tibetan Buddhism.

The town is home to various Buddhist ‘Gompas’ (monasteries and learning centers), ancient Hindu and Jain temples, and is quickly becoming a center for traditional Tibetan lifestyle, handicrafts, thangkas, carpets, clothing, and more.

Another significant attraction is Triund hill, known as the ‘Jewel of Dharamshala.’ Triund, located about 9 kilometers from McLeod Ganj, is a one-day trek situated in the upper reaches of the town and is popular among camping enthusiasts.

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Dhauladhar Mountains, Dharamshala is one of the few hill resorts in the area where a day’s trek would take you to a snow-capped peak. Dharamshala gained international prominence after it became the temporary headquarters of the Dalai Lama and is now popularly called ‘The Little Lhasa in India’. Some places to visit in Dharamshala include the Kangra Art Museum at Kotwali Bazar, the War Memorial, Kunal Pathri Temple, and lush tea gardens on the way to Kunal Pathri. The Kangra Museum in Dharamshala provides insight into the town’s rich history with its display of various artifacts such as miniature paintings, sculptures, pottery, coins, jewelry, royal attire, and 5th-century manuscripts.
