So, you want to learn how to write a romance novel. That’s fantastic! Many people don’t realize that a significant portion of the general reading population consists of romance readers (whether they admit it or not).
A lot of aspiring writers believe there is a magical “formula” for writing romance fiction. This may be due to series romances like Harlequin, which seem to follow specific rules. In reality, some of these series novels do have guidelines you can request, but there isn’t a single formula that encompasses all romance writing, nor is there a guaranteed path to success as an author.
Even the “formulaic” series novels are much more challenging to write than they appear when you read them. Just ask anyone who has sat down in front of a blank sheet of paper with “Chapter One” written on it.

To help you begin your journey towards a successful writing career, try this exercise. Find a magazine or newspaper or even a box of old photographs; however, they should be of people you don’t know. If you use your family pictures, it won’t work. Old photos from your parents or grandparents with unfamiliar faces would be ideal. You can also ask friends for their pictures. If you can’t find any suitable photos, you can use a magazine or newspaper.
If using the latter, cut out several images. Look for interesting ones with multiple people in the frame.
If using photos, select a few that intrigue you.

You’ll be amazed at how much your creativity is stimulated by looking at a “real” picture rather than trying to conjure up ideas in your mind. Do this exercise whenever you feel stuck, or make it a daily ritual before you start writing (or at night if you’re a night owl). This is an excellent way to learn how to write a romance novel or any other type of novel. Keep a file of these short stories you create as exercises, and you’ll be able to incorporate them into your manuscript later on.
