Mount Dragon, created by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, tells the story of a research facility located deep in the deserts of New Mexico. The protagonist, Guy Carson, is an employee of GeneDyne who gets promoted and joins a team of scientists working on a virus intended to cure the flu. However, the virus has devastating consequences as it kills every living thing it comes into contact with.
Working under strict deadlines and in restrictive biohazard suits with constant supervision, tensions rise, and the scientists begin to crack under the pressure. Paranoia spreads, and people start dying under suspicious circumstances.
Fans of the collaborative works of Preston and Child will appreciate the quality of writing they have come to expect from this duo. Mount Dragon does not disappoint readers accustomed to their joint efforts.
Thriller enthusiasts, especially those with a medical interest, will also enjoy this novel.
Personally, I found this book thrilling from beginning to end. Scenes where the scientists were trapped in their biohazard suits made me feel claustrophobic, while the descriptions of the solitary desert were captivating. The novel had me hooked throughout.
The theme of altering human DNA adds an interesting conflict and opposing forces to the story. It also introduces an ethical dilemma without making the novel overly complex.
There were moments when certain details felt a bit “typical” and certain decisions and actions became predictable. The character pairings were somewhat obvious, but it didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.
Furthermore, the ending caught me by surprise. Although the novel had some predictable elements, it kept me guessing overall.
After finishing a Preston-Child novel, I usually look forward to diving into another one of their works. Unfortunately, I’ve run out of their new books, and now I join the group of readers eagerly awaiting their next publications.
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have created several successful novels together, including the exceptional Pendergast series. Fans generally agree that their collaborative works are more enjoyable reads than their individual solo works.
