You see all these talented young singers and watch your favorite vocalists perform effortlessly, and you think to yourself, “it seems so easy and natural for them.” Similarly, if you’re an athlete and you see an Olympic-level athlete run a 4-minute mile while you barely break 6 minutes, you place that person on a pedestal, where only they can go. However, it’s important to understand that while natural talent does play a role, singing is about learning the right sequence of actions and repeating them over and over (practice) until they become ingrained in your muscle memory and you no longer need to actively think about them; they just happen.
So when you hear your favorite singer or ANYONE doing anything amazing at a high level, remember that they’ve figured out specific sequences of actions and internalized and automated them to the point where they’re second nature.
Now, what differentiates an exceptional singer from a mediocre one? Two things:
- Work Ethic
- Attention to detail
Work Ethic is paramount. You may have seen someone with seemingly no talent work incredibly hard to achieve their goal and ultimately succeed, surprising everyone around them. Relying solely on natural talent is not enough; hard work and smart strategies are essential.
Attention to detail is another critical aspect. Your singing is the sum of its parts, including breathing control, diction, tone quality, and the use of dynamics and vocal colors. All of these factors contribute to the impression of singing with emotion. It’s essential to develop the SKILL of conveying that emotion to a listener effectively. Attention to detail involves determining the nuances you want to inject into your singing and developing the presence and body awareness that will take your performance to a new level.
Singing is one of the most beautiful art forms in existence. While some people may have more natural musical inclination than others, anyone can learn to sing from scratch; singing is a skill. It takes time and perseverance, but with voice lessons, practice, and the use of quality singing software to hone your skills, your singing can truly flourish. Whether you aspire to be a professional singer or just want to enjoy singing as a hobby, the same basic formula applies: work with a good vocal coach, practice diligently, and over time, your singing will blossom.
