A story is a powerful way to convey your thoughts and ideas to others. Here are some strategies to help make your story truly engaging.
First and foremost, ask yourself why you want to tell the story. What is the main point you want to get across? Shape the narrative in a way that highlights this point and makes it clear to your audience.
Set the scene. Use descriptive language to paint a vivid picture in your audience’s minds. When and where did the story take place? What was happening emotionally, physically, or spiritually?
Introduce the characters. Provide detailed descriptions that allow your audience to relate to them. Bring your characters to life by describing their relationships, quirks, and personalities. You can even use different voices or tones to give your characters more distinction.
Begin the journey. What is the objective of the journey? What challenges will be faced along the way?
Encounter obstacles. Introduce an exciting event that adds interest to the story. This could be a person, a challenge, a belief, or any other element. Adding embellishments can make the story more entertaining.
Overcome the barriers. Explain what needed to be done to overcome the obstacle. Did you have the determination and ability to overcome it? Did you receive help from someone else? Was there a hero involved? Be specific and provide a step-by-step account. This allows you to drive your point home.
Conclude the journey. How did things turn out in the end? Consider addressing the outcomes for everyone involved. What happened to the other characters? What about the main character?
Now, make your point. It’s best to focus on just one main point in your story. Know your point inside and out, and deliver it in the simplest way possible. Find “the phrase that pays,” a concise statement that captures the essence of your message.
Finally, ask your audience a question. Make your story relatable to the audience by connecting it to their own experiences. Turn your main point into a question that resonates with them. This helps to engage their emotions and thoughts.
Practice, practice, practice. Share your stories with anyone willing to listen. Seek feedback, make improvements, and tell the story again. This process will only make you better at storytelling.
