Adele, the British singer, has made modern records with her studio album 21, as it has topped the British Music Charts for the ninth consecutive week.
The album, which debuted at number one, has now stayed at the top longer than any other album in the current century. Last week, it was announced that 21 has become the most downloaded album in British history, breaking the record for the fastest studio album to reach one million copies sold. It achieved this milestone within just three months, from January to March 2011.
But that’s not all. There is more reason to celebrate for the talented British singer. Her single “Someone Like You” has also reached the top of the UK music charts, enabling her to achieve a track and album double for the fifth consecutive week. And it’s not just her second album that is performing well. Adele’s debut album ’19’ still holds a respectable second place. In three of the last five weeks, both her sophomore and first albums have occupied the top two spots on the UK charts.
In other chart news, The Strokes’ new album “Angles” managed to become the highest new entry on the charts, debuting just below Adele’s ’19’ at the third position. The collaborative effort of Ronan Keating and Burt Bacharach also follows closely behind The Strokes, securing the fourth spot with their album “When Ronan Met Burt” at number five.
There is also room in the Top 10 charts for former Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger, whose 2010 album “Killer Love” is still going strong, occupying the eighth place. R&B singer Chris Brown also managed to secure a spot in the Top 10 with his newly released album “F.A.M.E.,” debuting at the tenth place.
Several other new entries made their way into the top 20, including Duran Duran’s “All You Need Is Now” at 11th, Joe Bonamassa’s “Dust Bowl” at 12th, and Green Day and The Drifters’ “Awesome As F**k” and “Up On The Roof” appearing at 14th and 17th positions, respectively.
With the arrival of these new entries, some albums had to drop down the rankings. The Vaccines’ “What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?” took a plunge from its previous position of 11th to end the week at 15th, while Daniel O’Donnell’s “Moon Over Ireland” experienced an even greater decline, moving down from 7th to 16th.
