Some people are born with a great voice and the natural ability to sing. Singing isn’t rocket science, and with a little practice, you can teach yourself how to sing. There are numerous resources you can use to learn singing, both free and paid. Among the paid resources, you can learn from a professional music instructor, or you can purchase books and DVDs that teach singing techniques and styles. You can also use free resources like how-to websites and local music groups to teach yourself how to sing. Popular websites for singing include Vocalist, The Vocal Coach, and eHow. eHow is one of the most comprehensive resources covering many how-to tips and singing techniques, while Vocalist covers all aspects of singing in great detail, including vowel pronunciation, singing posture, singing techniques, and even voice control.

Here are some tips to help you teach yourself how to sing for those who don’t have experience in singing:

  1. One of the most common mistakes beginner singers make is not knowing how to use throat muscles, the diaphragm, or vocal cords while singing. Relaxation is the key to excellent singing. Remember to keep your body completely relaxed and develop your singing style. It’s essential to be unique but never go off-tune.
  2. Another focal point in learning how to sing is performing proper breathing exercises. Deep breathing exercises help open the airway to the vocal cords, allowing air to fill the lungs. Exhale slowly but don’t release air in one burst.
  3. Learn the musical scale! You can teach yourself how to sing in various styles if you learn the notes in a musical scale. The scale is essential for operatic singing, such as a soprano or a tenor. Ask a friend who plays the piano or keyboard to help you with vocal warm-ups using a musical scale. Don’t attempt to sing without proper warm-ups – you might end up damaging your vocal cords permanently, especially if you try to sing high notes.
  4. Put on your headphones and play your favorite track on your MP3 player. Sing along with it and record what you’re singing. This will help you compare your version of the song with the original and make corrections. Teach yourself how to sing using technique, and you’ll be amazed at the progress you make over time. Remember to experiment with different types of music. It’s relatively easy to develop alto or bass singing techniques, while singing high notes may take years of practice.
  5. If you can afford it, take lessons from a music instructor. A music instructor can help you identify the type of voice you have, such as bass or tenor. Accordingly, your instructor can then teach you specific techniques and methods to help develop your voice professionally.
  6. If you want to teach yourself how to sing just for fun, join a local church choir! It’s free, and you’ll learn a lot in terms of voice modulation and singing techniques due to the different pitches used in choir singing.
