The Super Mario Bros have become synonymous with video game royalty since their creation by Nintendo. Although the initial Nintendo console had impressive capabilities when it was released in the mid-1980s, it took some time for it to gain popularity. The early Nintendo games didn’t offer anything significantly different from what was already available from companies like Atari. It wasn’t until the introduction of the game ‘Super Mario Bros’ that Nintendo truly made a splash in the gaming industry, solidifying their status as icons of 1980s entertainment.

Recognizing the immense success of the first Super Mario Bros game, Nintendo made a smart move by including the game as a part of the package when you purchased the console. This strategic marketing decision led to a boost in sales for their gaming system.

When I first got my Nintendo Entertainment System, it came with the Super Mario Bros game, and I felt like I was in video game paradise. As a big fan of the Atari 2600, I was blown away by the superior sound and graphics that Nintendo offered. Beyond the improved visuals and audio, what truly set Super Mario Bros apart from other games was its expansive size and level design. Atari games often lacked layered depth, but Super Mario Bros had it in abundance.

Even today, Super Mario Bros games continue to be released for modern Nintendo systems like the ‘Gamecube’ and the ‘N64’. There is no doubt that the Super Mario Bros serve as the flag bearers and nationally recognized symbols for Nintendo systems, contributing more to the success of the Japan-based company than any other marketing efforts to date. Simply including the Super Mario Bros in a game almost guarantees higher sales—it is that enticing. It’s no surprise, then, that there are countless Mario Bros-inspired games available today.

One of my favorite more recent Super Mario Bros games is the Mario Kart series. What’s really cool about these games is that you can play them with other players simultaneously. While you could play the original Super Mario Bros games with multiple players, it wasn’t at the same time, so you often had to wait for your turn. Mario Kart games are fun because you can play with multiple players and have a great time competing against each other while still being friends in the end.
