This is a peculiarly enjoyable science fiction Early Science Fiction On The Airwaves - Science Fiction in Radio Some might argue that Science Fiction has existed as long as civilization itself, as people gazed at the stars and wondered, "what if…" Juvenile Serials from the 1930s The first scifi old-time radio shows were primarily adventure serials aimed at young audiences, featuring a scientific theme, most notably Buck Rogers and… film. I had half expected it to be similar to “Jumper” and “Wanted” with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie, and indeed, the plot does become somewhat convoluted.
The film stars the lovely Dakota Fanning (“The Secret Lives of Bees,” and I believe her sister was in “Phoebe in Wonderland”) as Cassie Holmes, and Chris Evans (“Street Kings,” “Fantastic Four,” “4: Rise of the Silver Surfer”) as Nick Gant. The two find themselves in Hong Kong, racing against time to locate another girl, Kira Hudson, portrayed by the beautiful Camilla Belle (you might find something strangely familiar about her eyes; she was, of course, Evolet in “10,000 B.C.”). Their mission is to bring down the secret agency that has been relentlessly pursuing them, wreaking havoc on their lives and the lives of their families.
Each of the characters possesses specialized abilities, which is where things can get a bit perplexing. Pushers can manipulate thoughts, making people believe what they desire and do their bidding. Movers have the power to move objects, while Watchers can predict the future (although, naturally, the future is subject to change). Stitchers can heal injured individuals, even those harmed by Bleeders, who possess the ability to emit high-pitched screams that can shatter glass, damage eardrums, and affect blood vessels and objects. Sniffers have the uncanny ability to track anyone by touching their belongings, much like a dog. Wipers can erase memories, Shifters can manipulate patterns of light to change the shape and appearance of objects, and Shadows can remain unseen by Sniffers.
From the action-packed opening, where a young Nick Gant must flee from the antagonist Henry Carver, portrayed by Djimon Hounsou (“Amistad,” “Never Back Down”), to the confrontations between Nick and Victor Budarin, played by Neil Jackson (“Quantum of Solace,” “Blade: The Series”), the film maintains a constant pace of thrilling action with intriguing plot twists that many are sure to enjoy.
