Summer is almost upon us, and with it comes a whole slew of upcoming sci-fi films. Confused about what exactly is coming out? Below is a quick guide to some of the biggest genre movies coming soon to a theater near you.
In May, we have the Marvel Comics take on Norse mythology, Thor. Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character, while Anthony Hopkins plays his father, Odin. Director Kenneth Branagh, known more for his work in Shakespearean plays, brings a different approach to the superhero Heroes in Daily Life: The Art of Triumphing Over Adversity - In a previous post, I broached the subject of how, like heroes, we too can triumph over adversity. Our optimism is our shield, and positivity is our strength. Life's challenges are villains to conquer, not threats to fear. With an upbeat spirit, we turn trials into triumphs, problems into possibilities, becoming heroes. Each new day… genre.
Not to be left out, DC Comics and Warner Bros. are releasing Green Lantern in June. Test pilot Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds, receives a mysterious green ring from an alien that grants him incredible power. Joining the other 7,000 Green Lanterns on the planet Oa, Hal is suddenly responsible for not only saving Earth but defending the entire universe.
On the Fourth of July weekend, the latest epic featuring the metallic titans arrives – Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon. Shia LaBeouf once again teams up with Optimus Prime and the Autobots to reach a Cybertronian ship that crash-landed on the moon before Megatron can seize it.
At the end of July, the long-awaited Cowboys and Aliens, starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, finally makes its debut. Directed by Jon Favreau, known for the Iron Man films, this sci-fi western promises a serious tone rather than a lighthearted one.
In August, we have a reboot/remake/prequel in the tireless Planet of the Apes franchise, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Set in the present day and drawing inspiration from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, actor Andy Serkis takes over from the late Roddy McDowall as Caesar, the first ape to evolve into something more.
The release date for a companion piece to John Carpenter’s movie The Thing, also known as The Thing, has been changed multiple times, but it is expected to come out sometime this year. It is not quite a remake but more of a prequel, going back to John Campbell’s original story and following the Norwegian expedition that was discovered destroyed in the original film. The producers claim that it seamlessly integrates with the original, but without the involvement of any original film crew, one wonders how close they can come.
While the buzz on these upcoming sci-fi films has been largely positive so far, you can never tell until the final product reaches the screen. However, with this guide, hopefully, you have a better idea of what to look out for.
