Audio cables are just as important as the sound itself. Without good cabling, you’ll lose a significant amount of quality, which can be disappointing. There are two major factors in audio cables: the resistance of the cable and the shielding of the cabling.
First things first, there are various types of cables, and you need to know what you want to achieve with the cable. Regarding the cable itself, we’re looking for cables with as low resistance as possible; if you can opt for gold, that would be ideal. This means that the lower the resistance, the better the sound signal you’ll receive. If you use a cable with high resistance, you’ll lose a lot of volume (SPL), resulting in low signal quality sound.
Shielding is crucial for signal quality and strength. There are several shielding techniques, as follows:
- Foil shielding: This provides 100% shielding and is suitable for all types of installed setups, effectively blocking all external interference. However, it is not very flexible.
- Wrapped cable: This is highly flexible but may wear out over time. It is primarily used for microphones since microphone cabling needs to be able to flex a lot.
There are even more shielding types available.
Another tip in audio cabling is the use of gold-plated connectors. Gold-plated connectors are a new advantage we have. The reason we use gold is that it is the best conductor of electricity, and for sound, the better the cable can conduct electricity, the stronger the signal strength will be.
