The Culture in American Tv Series

The American Future, by Simon Schama

Thanks to modern transportation and communication, the world is becoming smaller. The entire World of Warcraft (WoW) community seems no larger than a big city, where citizens with diverse cultural backgrounds and values come together, even to buy WoW gold.

Amidst inevitable cultural exchanges and clashes, the “villagers” strive to live in harmony in this modern world. The advanced culture of any country is not an isolated phenomenon, but rather the result of extensive exchanges with people from other cultures.

In many ways, the TV show Friends can be seen as a microcosm of American society. While I may not agree with all their moral concepts, I learn from Friends the meaning and value of companionship. Whether in joy or sorrow, wealth or poverty, right or wrong, the six characters are always there for each other.

Rachel is a sensitive girl who can see the true beauty in human nature, while Phoebe is intelligent and rational, often taking decisive action at critical moments. Monica is warm-hearted but can be a bit controlling and obsessive. As for the three guys, Joey leaves the deepest impression. He is like sunshine, spreading warmth to the hearts of his audience.

A zombie is a fictional character depicted in films as a reanimated or undead corpse. Early zombie movies were classified under the horror genre, but eventually, zombies became popular and developed their own subgenre. Zombies in fiction often involve elements such as plot twists, an apocalypse or societal breakdown, and, of course, flesh-eating corpses. The film that started it all, “Night of the Living Dead,” is an independently produced thriller created by the renowned George Romero in the late 1960s. The story follows a group of seven survivors seeking shelter in a farmhouse as they try to survive the night. George …

Screenwriting for Authors – What Your First Act Must Do

Book: Writing a Great Movie

The renowned writer/director Billy Wilder offered this piece of advice on screenwriting and filmmaking: “Grab ’em by the throat and never let go.”

This is what your first act, specifically, your initial 10 pages, should accomplish. The first act serves several purposes. It introduces your main characters, the setting, the time period, the theme, genre, and tone. This is the act where we meet both the protagonist and the antagonist.

In some films, we might not encounter the antagonist directly, but we are at least introduced to them, with hints of an ultimate revelation, as is often the case in mysteries. Even if we don’t see them yet, we are made acutely aware of their presence and the negative, often devastating, impact they will have on other characters in the story.

The first act also establishes the premise of the story: a saloon owner is surprised to see the woman he loves walk back into his life during World War II (Casablanca); a giant shark threatens a beach resort town at the beginning of the summer tourist season (Jaws); a young fighter pilot must rescue a kidnapped princess and destroy an evil empire (Star Wars).

Your first …

How A Film Consultant Can Improve A TV Project

Lead Writing Consultant

It is a common practice for movie and TV productions to hire consultants to assist the writing team. The head writers may not possess the detailed technical knowledge required for certain topics, but they still want to ensure accurate story developments and realistic dialogue. As a result, the production team often brings in expert consultants to provide guidance on the script.

Consultants are experts in various specialties. For legal shows like Boston Legal, consultants may include legal experts, law enforcement professionals, and forensic scientists. Other shows like Grey’s Anatomy may require medical consultants. These consultants are authoritative individuals with advanced degrees and years of experience in their respective fields, ensuring that the show appears authentic and true-to-life.

This practice has been in place for many years, but the demand for consultants has increased as audiences expect greater sophistication. In the late 70s, projects featuring computer-related plots often had unrealistic and nonsensical dialogue, as computers were not widely understood at the time. However, with the ubiquity of computers today, films can no longer get away with poor dialogue.

Two areas where script sophistication has greatly improved are hospital shows and legal dramas. These genres include some of the …
