The Elusive Obvious of Singing: It’s A (Learned) SKILL!

You see all these talented young singers and watch your favorite vocalists perform effortlessly, and you think to yourself, “it seems so easy and natural for them.” Similarly, if you’re an athlete and you see an Olympic-level athlete run a 4-minute mile while you barely break 6 minutes, you place that person on a pedestal, where only they can go. However, it’s important to understand that while natural talent does play a role, singing is about learning the right sequence of actions and repeating them over and over (practice) until they become ingrained in your muscle memory and you no longer need to actively think about them; they just happen.

So when you hear your favorite singer or ANYONE doing anything amazing at a high level, remember that they’ve figured out specific sequences of actions and internalized and automated them to the point where they’re second nature.

Now, what differentiates an exceptional singer from a mediocre one? Two things:

  1. Work Ethic
  2. Attention to detail

Work Ethic is paramount. You may have seen someone with seemingly no talent work incredibly hard to achieve their goal and ultimately succeed, surprising everyone around them. Relying solely on natural talent is not …

However, not everyone has the time or money to invest in $100/hour singing classes. If that’s the case for you, it’s still possible to teach yourself how to sing with a few simple tools and excellent free online courses. How to Sing Falsetto for Beginners

If you want to learn how to sing falsetto, there are several resources that can be helpful. Falsetto, also known as a false singing voice, gained popularity in the 1950s when it emerged from a cappella music. During this time, many “doo-wop” groups, or falsetto groups, were formed, similar to gospel quartets in the Southern United States. To learn falsetto, you should ideally be a trained singer looking to expand your vocal range. The term “falsetto” is typically used for male singers, like Justin Timberlake, who sing in a higher-than-normal pitch. This term can also apply to high-pitched singing in general.

Singing high notes requires a lot of practice and vocal exercises, as the vocal cords need to adapt to the higher pitch. Falsetto does not apply to female singers since they naturally possess the ability to sing high notes, unlike male singers. Common mistakes when learning to sing falsetto include an inability to control pitch and fluctuating between high pitch and your natural voice. If your chest vibrates while singing, it means you are using your natural voice, not falsetto. When singing falsetto, only the outer edges of the vocal cords should vibrate.

How Do You Sing Better In A Way That Will Attract Management?

Many aspiring singers may be wondering how to sing better than they currently do, in a way that could attract management. The right management can expand your horizons, enhance your reputation, and free you up to focus on the creative aspects of being a singer. However, there are some factors to consider before jumping into a business relationship with management.

Management is, in many ways, like a marriage. It is a contractual business agreement with serious legal and financial responsibilities for both parties. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure you are prepared to be managed and that you have chosen the right person for the role. Poor management can break your career, so it is wise to look for proper credentials and a track record of past successes in managing artists like yourself.

To determine if you are ready for management, consider these questions:

  1. Should you be seeking management, or should management be seeking you?
  2. Are you truly ready for management? Can you sing well enough, and do you possess the skills that require management at this stage?
  3. How can you sing in a way that will attract the right kind of management?
