Music - an art for itself - Headphones and music notes / musical notation system

As a method of musical notation, tabs have been around for a long time, but nowadays they are often looked down upon as a lesser form of musical communication. In reality, tabs are a simplified version of traditional musical notation, and sheet music itself emerged as a need for more convenient notation when music became more complex during medieval times. Guitar tabs have proven to be a valuable tool for many people who have taken up the electric guitar and wanted to start playing as quickly as possible.

Guitarists who compose music using tabs and share their creations have made a wide range of music accessible to recreational musicians who never learned to read traditional sheet music. For guitarists, learning to read music is often seen as a waste of time when they can better express their emotions through music using their own techniques. This viewpoint contradicts the idea that the more theoretical knowledge you have, the more resources you have to express your ideas.

However, using tabs allows the guitarist to understand a piece of music in their own way and utilize their musical intuition and improvisational skills to create a musical work that is as much their own as the original composer’s. Guitar tabs are a blessing for guitar players who don’t simply want to replicate someone else’s work.

You can find electric guitar tabs in music stores alongside traditional sheet music, but the quickest and best place to look for them is online. Although there is a legal debate surrounding tab publishers infringing on the rights of the original composers, many tabs are still available for free. However, you should exercise caution when using tabs created by amateur guitarists, as you may need to make adjustments if they don’t sound right.

Lastly, it’s important to note that using guitar tabs to learn new music is not without its challenges – you may need to supplement them with some information that is typically included in sheet music. You should have a basic understanding of note values, time signatures, and tempo. Essentially, you should be able to hear the music in your head and just need to know where to place your fingers on the fretboard. That is the original purpose for which guitar tabs were designed.
