Its fundamental steps involve two movements, forward… based on improvisation and does not require the full use of the dance floor.

Different styles of salsa exist in various parts of the world. Three of the most popular styles are Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Colombian. However, the distinctions between these styles are not sharp. A dancer who is familiar with one style can dance in other styles, as the basic steps and figures are virtually the same.

Salsa is typically performed by couples, but can also be danced solo or with more than two people. In this dance, the man takes the lead and directs the woman using hand movements.

Beginner dancers learn the basic steps first, followed by combination figures. Salsa requires the ability to execute complex footwork in sync with the rhythm of the music. As a result, students are generally taught to capture the rhythm of the music.

Learn Salsa Steps

Salsa dance consists of 8 equal time units. During two of these units, specifically 4 and 8, the dancers pause and do not make any moves. Therefore, counts 4 and 8 are not included; (1, 2, 3, pause, 5, 6, 7, pause). During the other six time units, it is essential to step back and forth with each beat.

1- Step forward with the left foot, placing weight on the left foot.

2- Shift weight to the right foot without stepping.

3- Bring the left foot back to its original position.

4- Pause. No movement is performed.

5- Step backward with the right foot.

6- Shift weight to the left foot without stepping.

7- Place the right foot forward to its previous position.

8- Pause. No movement is performed.

During the pause moments at counts 4 and 8, tapping, or striking the foot on the floor, is performed to avoid losing rhythm. Tapping adds an aesthetic quality to salsa dance during these pause moments and is taught to students once they become proficient in basic salsa steps.
