Researches On The Effects of Videogames

If you’re looking for innovative ways to keep your mind sharp in 2009, consider playing strategy games, especially if you’re 60 years old or older. That’s the conclusion reached by Dr. Arthur Kramer and his colleagues in their studies.

The two studies are:

  1. Basak C, et al “Can training in a real-time strategy video game attenuate cognitive decline in older adults?” Psychol Aging 2008; DOI: 10.1037/a0013494.
  2. Boot, W. R., Kramer, A. F., Simons, D. J., Fabiani, M. & Gratton, G. (2008) The effects of video game playing on attention, memory, and executive control. Acta Psychologica, 129, 387-398.

Let’s first examine the initial study, which was a groundbreaking experiment that demonstrated significant cognitive benefits in adults over 60 who played a strategy video game (Rise of Nations) for 23 hours.

A team at the University of Illinois recruited 40 adults over the age of 60, with half of them asked to play a computer game called Rise of Nations, a role-playing game where players must build their empire. They have to construct cities, manage resources, employ people, maintain a military, and expand their territory.

Both the test and control groups were assessed before, during, and after the video game …

Setting Benchmarks Toward Videogaming

For many players today, the visuals of a game are often prioritized over gameplay. However, there are still those who value gameplay above all else, or vice versa. The gaming industry is rapidly evolving, and so is the technology behind computer gaming. Each year, developers showcase their new game engines, which have been built from the ground up. They eagerly present their masterpieces to the public through expos and major conferences. They either update their existing engines or incorporate various enhancements such as high-definition textures, real-time physics simulations, and detailed debris and clothing interactions.

Benchmarking is similar to assessing a PC’s performance and features. It is like a student taking a CPA exam, where their ability to think critically and demonstrate expertise in the subject matter is evaluated. There are various benchmarking tools available, including 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11, just to name a few.

With the recent release of blockbuster video game titles like Dead Space 2, Dragon Age 2, and Homefront, 2011 has been an exciting year for gaming. One of the highly anticipated titles set to launch on March 22nd is Crysis 2. When Crytek, the company behind the first and second Crysis games, introduced …

It’s not even halfway through 2011 yet, and we have already seen some great PC games on the market. So despite what the cynics may say, it’s evident that PC gaming is far from over. If we continue to receive fantastic titles like we have this year, there will be many more exciting years ahead for PC gaming.

Here are some of the standout games in 2011 that should not be missed:

Shogun 2: Total War

Shogun 2: Total War is an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys immersive strategy games filled with adventure. The stunning graphics will make you feel like you’ve been transported to Japan. However, before you rush out to buy this game, it’s important to ensure that your computer meets the high system requirements, which is the only downside.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

While it may not make it to the top of the best games list for 2011, Star Wars: The Old Republic should still make it into the top 10. The developers have promised that it will be the best Star Wars game ever, although they may be biased in saying so.

Fortunately, there have been some positive …
