Sony Compact Digital Camera

If you’re looking to upgrade your old camera, particularly for sports photography The value of photographic prints - Stephan R. Lewis is a professional photographer. He accepted to share his knowledge with us, with this exclusive article. The value of photographic prints I have been in the photo industry trenches for a long time and have watched many things come and go in popularity. When I say 'trenches' I mean not the glamour… or capturing distant scenes, a super zoom compact camera might be the right choice for you. These cameras are characterized by their zoom lenses, typically starting at 10x magnification. While they may resemble other compact cameras in terms of size, they are slightly wider to accommodate the extended lens. Some models, known as “bridge” cameras, have a more professional design with a non-retractable lens and a handgrip. They bridge the gap between compact cameras and larger DSLR-style cameras.

Super zoom cameras are often referred to as “sports zooms” because they are popular among parents of children involved in outdoor sports. These cameras allow parents to get closer to the action from the sidelines, capturing great shots even from a distance.

There are several super zoom cameras available, but let’s focus on six representative models from Canon, Fuji, Olympus, and Nikon.

To differentiate within the super zoom class, price is a key factor. Among our selected samples, the price break falls at $300. There are three models above this price and three below it. Let’s start with the lower-priced group.

In the under $300 range, we have the Nikon L110, Canon SX130 IS, and Fuji S1800. All three cameras offer 12-megapixel resolution, image stabilization, and the ability to capture 720p HD video. However, the Nikon L110 stands out as the only model in this group with an HDMI port for direct HD TV connection. It’s worth noting that all three cameras are powered by AA batteries, which is somewhat uncommon in camera models.

The Fuji S1800, priced at around $229.99, is a well-equipped bridge camera with an 18x zoom lens and fast 8 fps image capture. It features a clear and bright 3-inch LCD viewscreen, user-friendly controls, and excellent image quality. This camera is recommended for its affordability and performance.

In the mid-range of the price bracket, we have Canon’s SX130 IS. The SX130 IS resembles a typical compact camera but is chunkier. It offers a powerful 12x zoom lens and Canon’s modern SMARTAuto mode, which simplifies the picture-taking process. Priced at $249.99, the SX130 IS is great for family photographers who require a longer zoom.

The Nikon L110 is the last of our under $300 super zoom cameras. It is particularly suited for sports photography, with the ability to capture 11 frames per second for up to 20 consecutive shots. The 15x zoom lens is supported by Nikon’s 5-way image stabilization. While it may not be the highest-end camera among the initial trio, the Nikon L110 boasts some serious features typically found in more expensive cameras. It is priced at $279.99.

Other cameras that fall into the under $300 category include the Fuji JZ300 with its 10x zoom lens and compact body, the Nikon S5100 with its blazing speed and 5x zoom, Canon’s SX210IS with a great 14x zoom lens in a pocket-sized body, and the Nikon S8100 with a 10x zoom. These alternate cameras offer most of the features available in the super zoom class, although they may not be as fast or as powerful.

Now, let’s move on to the over $300 super zoom cameras. The three cameras we have chosen for this category are truly exceptional. Each features a zoom lens of 25x or longer, with two offering 720p HD video capability and the third providing 1080p HD. All of them have HDMI ports for direct HD TV connection.

The Olympus SP-800UZ boasts a 30x wide-angle zoom lens. It has a dedicated button for easy recording of 720p HD videos. Internal enhancements include good face recognition and tracking, creative filters, and more. Priced at $349.99, the Olympus SP-800UZ is possibly the most affordable camera with a lens longer than 25x.

Nikon offers the P100 with a 26x zoom lens. When you hold a Nikon P100 in your hands, it feels solid and substantial, with a handgrip that fits your palm as if it were custom-made for you. With the ability to shoot at 10 frames per second, it can handle even the fastest action, and Nikon’s 5-Way image stabilization keeps your photos sharp. The P100 was one of the first compact cameras to offer 1080p HD movie capture. We highly recommend the P100 for its build quality and features, making it a favorite among photographers for a long time. It is priced at $399.99 and offers a lot of value for your money.

The final camera in our super zoom selection is Canon’s SX30 IS. While it may not be the first bridge camera, Canon’s IS series has proven to be durable and reliable over the years. Starting with the S1-IS in 2004, the series has consistently been a top choice. The SX30 IS stands out with its 35x wide-angle zoom lens, surpassing the capabilities of its predecessors. It offers features that were not even considered in 2004. This camera is a powerful and versatile option for capturing distant subjects.

To summarize, we have presented a range of super zoom cameras with excellent zoom capabilities and fast performance, with prices ranging from $229.99 up to $429.99. While Panasonic, Samsung, and other brands also offer super zoom cameras, the models mentioned in this article stand out for their attributes, image quality, and reliability.
