The Mona Lisa Western Art - Known Western Artists & Paintings - [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="350" class="zemanta-img"] The Mona Lisa. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)[/caption] Art is highly subjective, and while the following list may not be exhaustive or completely comprehensive, it can serve as a fun way to learn more about familiar artists and discover new ones you may not have known about before. Michelangelo was an Italian… is undoubtedly the world’s most famous painting. Yet, it is surprising how little is known for certain about Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece.
If you’ve read or enjoyed The Da Vinci Code (and who hasn’t?), then you’ve had a taste of some of the controversies surrounding this masterpiece.
However, when it comes to the Mona Lisa, history doesn’t need a fictional author to make it intriguing. What is known and unknown about the masterpiece is just as fascinating as any fictional story could hope to be.
Truth is Stranger Than Fiction
Firstly, Mona Lisa is not the painting’s actual name. At least, it is not the name given to it by its creator, da Vinci.
In truth, we do not know what he called it. He did not give it a name when he completed it in 1507, despite working on it for over four years.
The Italian name “Mona Lisa,” meaning “Madam Lisa,” was assigned to it by the painter Giorgio Vasari in 1550. He believed that the portrait depicted Lisa Gherardini, the young wife of a wealthy silk merchant from Florence.
It’s Mine, All Mine!
In a rare move, da Vinci kept the painting for himself. Whoever may have commissioned the painting did not receive it. It is not even certain if anyone actually commissioned it. Leonardo was a commercial artist who earned a living through painting, making this a rather unusual decision.
Records show that da Vinci took the painting with him as he traveled and continuously made adjustments to it until his death in 1519.
Great Art Lives On
After Leonardo passed away in 1519, the King of France acquired the masterpiece, and it remained in the royal family for over 220 years, until the time of the French Revolution. It was then displayed in its current home, The Louvre.

The Mona Lisa is certainly my favourite – thanks for blogging about it. There are a lot of paintings out there which attract controversy even hundreds of years after they were first produced.
Something i find interesting is that Da Vinci revisited this painting several times and he obviously felt it was important to his overall career and sought perfection.
